The Mandalorian cameo is a fun wink at fans that works on many levels. In addition to portraying one of Star Wars’ most iconic heroes, Hamill is a storied voice actor, perhaps best known for his voice work as the Joker in Rocksteady Games’ Arkham Asylum series and Batman: The Animated Series. Furthermore, the cantina where Luke and Obi-Wan first met Han and Chewy made a point of refusing to serve droids—yet Hamill’s droid is now tending bar. Eagle-eyed fans may even recognize the droid as EV-9D9, Jabba the Hutt’s droid torturer from Return of the Jedi.

In many respects, The Mandalorian is a love letter to long-time franchise fans, as each episode is filled with obscure references, callbacks, and Easter Eggs. And it seems as if that trend will only intensify in the show’s forthcoming second season, with Temuera Morrison set to play the legendary bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Another well-circulated cast rumor suggests Rosario Dawson will be portraying the fan-favorite Ahsoka Tano, who appeared in Star Wars: Rebels and was arguably the main character of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Eager viewers won’t have to wait much longer, either. Despite coronavirus complications, The Mandalorian’s showrunner, Jon Favreau, recently announced the release month for season 2.
The first season of The Mandalorian is streaming now on Disney+.
