As seen below in the video from Reyes Rosas’ YouTube channel, Kirby most definitely holds his own on the race track in Mario Kart 8, as he overtakes opponents with ease on the Sweet Sweet Canyon track, ultimately placing 3rd overall in the contest. Plus, interestingly enough, instead of using one of the game’s standard vehicles, the mod also adds a unique automobile that pays homage to the Kirby series, with the character driving a yellow star kart.
Since Mario Kart 8 offers little in the way of Nintendo icons from series beyond the Super Mario franchise, save for the likes of Link from The Legend of Zelda, the Splatoon Inklings, and characters from Animal Crossing, Kirby would be a great addition to the roster in order to add a bit more flair and crossover appeal to the game. Of course, the Big N could eventually add Kirby to the title’s Deluxe edition for Nintendo Switch as DLC, which would certainly delight plenty of fans in the process.
For now, though, Kirby is only available in Mario Kart 8 by way of an unofficial mod thanks to the skills of SmashingRenders, which can be acquired right here. Perhaps with subsequent sequels, Nintendo will start branching out to even more of its other IPs and begin to make Mario Kart more like Super Smash Bros. by incorporating an even larger amount of characters from the entire Nintendo universe.
Mario Kart 8 is available for Wii U, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is out now for Nintendo Switch.
